An independent report based on Thames Water’s own data reveals that illegal sewage dumping has not decreased since 2021, with at least 8,499 illegal discharges recorded between 2021 and 2025, including 167 at Oxford’s treatment works—serving 250,000 people—where illegal spills occurred on at least 125 days from 2023 to 2025.
The site, among the top eight most prolific polluters, discharges into the Pottery Stream and River Thames.
Some treatment works may be operating beyond capacity, risking undetected pollution.
Thames Water says it is reviewing the findings, reaffirms its five-year upgrade plan to boost treatment and reduce storm discharges, and notes that river health is affected by farming, industry, runoff, wildlife, and extreme weather.
