Sarnia police leaders' contracts extended amid ongoing transformation and staffing challenges.
The Sarnia Police Board has extended the contracts of its top leaders: Chief Derek Davis until 2032, Deputy Chief Ron Hansen until 2029, and Deputy Chief Michael Van Sickle until 2034.
The move, aimed at ensuring leadership continuity during ongoing transformation, comes amid challenges including years of underfunding, outdated equipment, staffing issues, and a 66% rise in Criminal Code charges since 2021.
Since Davis joined in 2022, police service spending has increased by about 45%, though it remains roughly a quarter of the city’s budget.
The board expressed confidence in the leadership team as the department works to improve operations and meet provincial standards, even as city council considers alternative policing models, including potential involvement by the Ontario Provincial Police.
Los contratos de los líderes de la policía de Sarnia se extendieron en medio de la transformación en curso y los desafíos de la dotación de personal.
