Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in Madurai on March 1, 2026, announced infrastructure projects worth ₹4,400 crore, including the four-laning of two national highway stretches in Tamil Nadu, aimed at improving connectivity, reducing travel time, and boosting trade and tourism.
He highlighted a ninefold increase in railway budget allocations since 2014, with 1,300 km of new tracks and 97% electrification, and inaugurated the Pamban vertical lift sea bridge.
Modi also unveiled plans for bullet train corridors between Bengaluru-Chennai and Chennai-Hyderabad, a rare earth mineral corridor, and eight redeveloped railway stations under the Amrit Bharat scheme.
The initiatives, aligned with the PM Gati Shakti framework, aim to enhance regional economic growth and multimodal integration.
