Malta’s government reopened bird trapping licences, violating EU law and sparking environmental backlash.
BirdLife Malta has condemned the Maltese government’s reopening of trapping licence applications, calling it a violation of EU law and a step backward in environmental protection.
The move, allowing new applicants until March 18, undermines Malta’s EU commitments since 2004 to phase out finch trapping, which the European Court of Justice has ruled illegal.
The NGO alleges the government is using “scientific research” as a pretext and exploiting the timing for political gain.

It demands the government withdraw the applications, comply with EU obligations, and strengthen environmental enforcement.
