The LA Kings fired coach Jim Hiller after a losing streak and playoff exit, naming D.J. Smith interim coach.
The Los Angeles Kings fired head coach Jim Hiller on March 1, 2026, following a five-game losing streak and a drop out of playoff contention, and named D.J.
Smith will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
The decision came after an 8-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers, during which fans chanted for Hiller's dismissal, and came as the Kings were three points behind the final Western Conference wild-card spot with a 24-21-14 record.
Hiller, who went 93-58-24 in 175 games with the Kings, was replaced by Smith, a former Ottawa Senators coach who joined the Kings' staff in February 2024.
Matt Greene, the team's player development coach, has also been promoted to assistant coach.
Despite praising Hiller's dedication, general manager Ken Holland stated that the team requires a leadership change to maximize its potential.
