The Los Angeles Kings fired head coach Jim Hiller on March 1, 2026, after a five-game losing streak and a fall out of playoff contention, naming D.J.
Smith as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
The decision followed an 8-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers, where fans chanted for Hiller’s dismissal, and came as the Kings sat three points out of the final Western Conference wild-card spot with a 24-21-14 record.
Hiller, who had a 93-58-24 record in 175 games with the Kings, was replaced by Smith, a former Ottawa Senators coach who joined the Kings’ staff in February 2024.
The team also promoted player development coach Matt Greene to assistant coach.
General manager Ken Holland cited the need for a leadership change to maximize the team’s potential despite praising Hiller’s dedication.
