Iran appoints Ayatollah Arafi to interim leadership after unconfirmed death of Khamenei amid regional tensions.
Following the reported death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Ayatollah Alireza Arafi has been appointed to Iran's interim Leadership Council, along with President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei.
The council, established under Article 111 of Iran's Constitution, will oversee the country's governance until the Assembly of Experts chooses a permanent supreme leader.
Arafi, a senior cleric and long-time member of the Guardian Council and Assembly of Experts, is expected to play a key role in ensuring stability throughout the transition.
The appointment comes amid rising regional tensions following a US-Israeli strike on Tehran, which Iran has condemned and responded to with military action throughout the Middle East.
