Healthcare groups urge U.S. Education Department to expand student loan access to nursing and healthcare programs.
On February 28, 2026, multiple organizations, including the Healthcare Association of New York State, the American Nurses Association, and the Tennessee Hospital Association, urged the U.S. Department of Education to revise proposed student loan regulations.
They emphasized that expanding eligibility to include nursing and advanced practice provider programs would improve access to federal aid, support workforce development, and address shortages in healthcare, especially in rural and underserved areas.
Concerns were also raised about the impact of proposed rules on institutional autonomy, data privacy, loan proration, and equity in higher education.
The Department is reviewing public comments as part of its rulemaking process.
