A 21-year-old volunteer firefighter from Kasbeer, Illinois, Trent W. Schafer, has been arrested and charged with arson after an intentional grass fire burned about 700 acres at the Green River Wildlife Area in Lee County on Friday.
Witnesses saw him set the fire before being detained.
The blaze, fueled by dry conditions and strong winds, became a five-alarm incident and was contained by 3:45 p.m., though hot spots persisted.
Schafer, who also serves with the Ohio, Illinois Fire Department, faces one count of arson, a class 2 felony carrying 3 to 7 years in prison, with additional charges pending in Lee and Bureau counties.
The National Weather Service had warned of high fire danger earlier that morning.
