A 8,000-year-old buried skeleton found in a Tulum cave suggests early ritual practices and human presence in North America.
A prehistoric skeleton discovered deep in a flooded cave near Tulum, Mexico, was likely intentionally buried over 8,000 years ago when the cave was dry, according to archaeologist Octavio del Río and Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History.
Found 26 feet below the surface and 656 feet from the entrance on a sediment dune, the remains suggest ritual burial.
The discovery adds to evidence of early human presence in North America, with some nearby remains dating to 13,000 years ago.
The cave system, now threatened by development like the Maya Train, is set to become a national protected area by 2026.
