The Vatican is restoring Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel fresco, removing decades of grime to reveal original colors, with work finishing by Easter.
The Vatican has launched a major restoration of Michelangelo’s "The Last Judgment" in the Sistine Chapel, removing a chalky white salt film that built up over 30 years due to visitor sweat, humidity, and climate change.
Using Japanese rice paper and distilled water, restorers are gently cleaning the 180-square-meter fresco from a permanent scaffolding system, revealing vibrant original colors and details obscured by the buildup.
The work, expected to finish by Easter in early April, allows continued public access with a digital reproduction displayed on a screen covering the scaffolding.
The project follows a previous major restoration from 1979 to 1999 and aims to preserve the masterpiece for future generations.
