The UK’s first geothermal plant in Cornwall began operations on Feb. 26, 2026, generating enough clean power for 10,000 homes and recovering lithium.
The UK’s first geothermal power plant, at United Downs in Cornwall, began operations on February 26, 2026, generating up to 3 megawatts of continuous electricity—enough for about 10,000 homes—using heat from deep underground wells.
The project, operated by Geothermal Engineering Ltd, extracts hot fluid from over 5 kilometers below the surface, driving turbines while also recovering lithium from mineral-rich fluids.
It marks a major step in the UK’s renewable energy strategy, offering reliable, weather-independent power and supporting domestic battery production.
Two additional sites are planned, with potential to add 10MW by 2030.
