Stéphane Dion, former Liberal leader and Canada’s ambassador to France, Germany, and the European Union, has been named the first "diplomat in residence" at Université de Montréal, starting March 1, 2026.
The non-teaching role within the faculty of arts and sciences will allow him to share expertise in foreign policy, public administration, and environmental issues with students and researchers.
A former political science professor at the university from 1984 to 1996, Dion returns after serving in federal cabinet roles, including foreign affairs and environment, where he helped draft the Clarity Act.
The three-year appointment aims to strengthen academic engagement with international diplomacy, particularly on Canada’s relations with Europe, the Indo-Pacific, Africa, and Latin America.
