Spanish and Chinese scientists found 150-million-year-old lizard footprints in Spain, the first Jurassic lizard trackways in Europe.
Scientists from Spain and China have discovered the first Jurassic lizard trackways in Europe in Asturias, Spain, with two well-preserved sets of footprints in the Lastres Formation. One trackway shows seven prints from a nearly 50 cm lizard, the other six from a 30 cm one. The find, published in Ichnos, marks the most recent discovery of its kind globally and offers rare insight into Late Jurassic small reptile diversity. Chinese researchers used lab simulations with modern lizards to compare behaviors, suggesting some locomotion and alert postures seen today may date back 150 million years. The fossils are now preserved and on display at the Jurassic Museum of Asturias.
