Pilot Thomas McGuire Jr. died Jan. 7, 1945, saving a fellow pilot, and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
Thomas B. McGuire Jr., a U.S. Army Air Forces pilot and Medal of Honor recipient, was one of World War II’s top aces in the Pacific Theater, trailing Richard I. Bong in aerial victories but rising to prominence after Bong was grounded for a war bond tour.
On January 7, 1945, McGuire died when his P-38 crashed during a low-altitude mission over Negros Island while attempting to save a fellow pilot under attack.
He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery, having flown 325 missions and earned numerous decorations.
His remains were found in 1949, and Fort Dix Army Air Field was renamed McGuire Air Force Base in his honor.
