Nigeria's Supreme Court upheld a former senator’s 7-year sentence and ordered him to repay $250,000 for accepting bribes.
Nigeria's Supreme Court on February 27, 2026, upheld former Senator Albert Bassey’s seven-year prison sentence and restored a lower court’s order requiring him to repay N204 million to Akwa Ibom State.
The ruling, led by Justice Stephen Jonah Adah, affirmed convictions on seven counts of fraud related to receiving 12 cars valued at N254 million as bribes while serving as Commissioner for Finance.
The court corrected the Court of Appeal’s earlier omission of the restitution order, finalizing the judgment in a case prosecuted by the EFCC.
The decision concludes a legal process that began in 2022.
