A New York woman was sentenced to nine years in prison for a $30 million fraud scheme promising fake green cards and funneling $600,000 into U.S. political campaigns.
Sherry Xue Li, a New York woman, was sentenced to nine years in federal prison for defrauding over $30 million from foreign investors, primarily from China, by falsely promising U.S. green cards in exchange for $500,000 investments in a non-existent development project.
She and her co-defendant, Lianbo Wang, used the funds for personal expenses and illegally funneled $600,000 into U.S. political campaigns, including a 2017 Donald Trump fundraiser, without the campaigns’ knowledge.
Li pleaded guilty to money laundering conspiracy and conspiracy to defraud the U.S., was ordered to forfeit $31.5 million, and must pay restitution.
Wang received a five-year sentence.
No charges were brought against the political campaigns involved.
