A man found 74 medieval silver coins in Cheshire, possibly from the 900s–1100s, and the hoard is now under review for legal status under UK treasure laws.
A hoard of 74 medieval silver coins, likely from 900 to 1100 AD, was presented to Cheshire Coroner Victoria Davies on February 25, 2026, after being found by Thomas Barnett while hunting rabbits in Bickley, near Malpas, possibly in the late 1920s or early 1930s. The coins were wrapped in lead, a common preservation method in the Middle Ages. A separate group of 15 coins found by Barnett in the 1980s was also submitted by Ross and Pamela Anderson, whose link to Barnett is unknown. Experts from Liverpool Museum believe the hoard meets the criteria under the Treasure Act 1996, which requires items over 300 years old with at least 10% precious metal. The coroner adjourned the inquest for further review, with a final hearing set for April 9, 2026.
