Iva Thomas, West Virginia’s only Black coroner, sued over racial discrimination, alleging unfair work assignments and a retaliatory suspension after reporting her great aunt’s death off-duty.
Iva Thomas, the only Black coroner in West Virginia, has sued the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and its administrator, alleging racial discrimination.
She claims she was given fewer death investigations than white colleagues and was suspended in March 2025 after reporting her great aunt’s death while off-duty.
Thomas says the suspension was retaliatory, noting no policy barred such reporting and no investigation followed.
She seeks reinstatement, lost wages, emotional damages, and legal fees, arguing the actions violated the West Virginia Human Rights Act.
The case is pending before Circuit Judge David Hardy, who recently denied a motion by the defendants.
