Ghana's president bans denial of emergency care after a man died post-accident due to hospital bed shortages.
President John Dramani Mahama has declared a zero-tolerance policy on Ghana’s “no-bed syndrome,” following the death of 29-year-old engineer Charles Amissah, who was turned away from three Accra hospitals after a hit-and-run accident.
In his 2026 State of the Nation Address, Mahama ordered all health facilities to treat emergency patients regardless of bed availability, emphasizing care must be provided even under makeshift conditions.
The government will accelerate major hospital expansions, including Ridge Hospital Phase Two and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital maternity block, while the Ministry of Health will issue new guidelines to standardize emergency care.
A three-member committee, led by Prof. Agyeman Badu Akosa, has been tasked with investigating the incident and reporting by March 5.
