Gardnerville, Nevada, has been selected as the site for the first national monument honoring World War II veterans of Basque descent, chosen by the North American Basque Organization over competing locations.
The memorial, to be built at Heritage Park, will honor over 2,150 identified Basque American veterans from across the U.S., including 311 from Nevada.
The project, funded through donations with a $500,000 goal, aims to be completed by December 2026.
Gardnerville was selected for its strong Basque heritage, historic ties to the sheep industry, and connection to three decorated veterans, the Etchemendy brothers.
The town board will review the design in April.
