Elliot Lake man Kenneth Neely, pleading for detox, sentenced to 14 days in custody and probation with treatment conditions.
Kenneth Neely, an Elliot Lake man with no stable housing, told Ontario Court Justice Dana Peterson he believes he will die without detox treatment, pleading during a February 2026 court appearance.
Neely, who pleaded guilty to theft, mischief, and failing to attend court, admitted taking a $1,500 bicycle in October 2024 and damaging a hospital door in December, saying he was not in control at the time.
The Crown sought a 45-day jail sentence and 12 months of probation, but Peterson sentenced him to 14 additional days in custody for the mischief, with time served for the theft, and increased pre-sentence custody from 12 to 18 days.
The judge acknowledged Neely’s likely medical crisis but called his actions deplorable, urging him to secure treatment and housing before release.
Neely was placed on 12 months of probation with conditions including mental health and substance misuse counselling, anger management, avoiding the high school, and providing a DNA sample.
