BMW is testing AI-powered humanoid robots in Germany to boost factory efficiency and safety.
BMW is launching a pilot program this summer at its Leipzig factory in Germany, deploying two AI-powered humanoid robots from Swedish company Hexagon, named AEON, to assist with assembly, component handling, and high-voltage battery production.
The robots, standing 1.65 meters tall and equipped with 22 sensors and multiple cameras, can navigate factory environments autonomously, make real-time decisions, and operate for about three hours on a single battery, which can be swapped in under a minute.
The initiative, part of BMW’s broader "Physical AI" strategy, follows successful trials in South Carolina and aims to enhance efficiency and worker safety without replacing human employees.
The move reflects growing automation efforts in European manufacturing amid rising competition from Chinese automakers.
