Uruguay and Argentina became the first Mercosur members to ratify the EU-Mercosur trade agreement, a 25-year-old deal aimed at creating one of the world’s largest free-trade zones.
The pact, signed in January 2026, seeks to eliminate tariffs on most goods and boost trade between Europe and South America, covering over 700 million people and a quarter of global GDP.
Uruguay’s Congress approved it 91-2 in the lower house with unanimous Senate backing, while Argentina’s Senate passed it 69-3.
The European Commission welcomed the move as a win for multilateralism, though the agreement faces a legal review by the EU Court of Justice, which could delay full implementation.
The EU may proceed provisionally pending the ruling.
Other Mercosur nations are expected to follow.
