A Ukrainian aid worker got six months in prison for a 2024 crash that caused a stillbirth, sparking calls for legal change.
A 31-year-old Ukrainian man, Yurii Dudek, was sentenced to six months in prison for careless driving that caused the stillbirth of a 31-week-old unborn child in a January 2024 crash on Ireland’s N25 road.
The collision, which occurred while Dudek was delivering humanitarian aid, involved a van rear-ending another vehicle, which then struck a car occupied by pregnant woman Saoirse Aylward, who underwent an emergency C-section.
Though Dudek pleaded guilty, showed remorse, and had no prior record, a custodial sentence was deemed necessary.
The judge reduced the original nine-month sentence to six months, crediting time served and not suspending his license due to his volunteer work.
Aylward, advocating for “Jax’s Law,” is pushing for legal recognition of stillborn children in fatal road accidents, citing emotional trauma and a justice system gap.
