Two mass graves with at least 171 bodies were found near Uvira, DRC, linked to M23 rebels, following their withdrawal.
At least 171 bodies have been found in two mass graves close to Uvira in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The victims are thought to have been murdered by the M23 rebel group due to possible connections to militias or government forces. Following M23's recent withdrawal from the area, the graves in Kiromoni and Kavimvira were discovered after being exposed by heavy rains. Congolese military forces reportedly prevented a civil society organization from visiting the locations. Despite a U.S.-mediated peace effort, the conflict, driven by rivalry for mineral-rich territory and tensions in the region, has displaced over 7 million people and claimed over 1,500 lives since late 2024. The M23, accused of widespread abuses, has grown to around 6,500 fighters. The results are not independently confirmed.
