Peterson Farms settles Oklahoma’s 20-year-old pollution lawsuit for $950,000, citing poultry waste runoff.
Peterson Farms Inc. has settled Oklahoma’s 20-year-old federal lawsuit over pollution in the Illinois River, agreeing to pay $950,000 to fund watershed cleanup and conservation.
The settlement, filed Feb. 24, resolves claims that poultry waste runoff from industrial operations harmed water quality.
Peterson Farms, which owns no poultry houses in the watershed and has no current contracts with producers there, pledged to follow litter removal rules if it resumes operations.
The agreement brings the total number of settled defendants to nine of the original 11, leaving only Cal-Maine Inc. and Simmons Foods unaccounted for.
Previous settlements were reached with Tyson ($19 million), Cargill ($6.5 million), and another company ($5 million), all denying wrongdoing.
The case, initiated in 2005, highlights ongoing environmental concerns over agricultural runoff in the Illinois River.
