North Dakota Supreme Court Justice Daniel Crothers is retiring after 20 years on the bench, the longest tenure in state history, urging preservation of judicial independence and impartiality.
Appointed in 2005 by Governor John Hoeven, he was re-elected in 2008, 2012, and 2022.
He will be succeeded by attorney Mark Friese, appointed by Governor Kelly Armstrong, effective March 9.
Crothers, a Fargo native and UND law graduate, emphasized courts must remain free from political influence and criticized public attacks on the judiciary.
He plans to spend time with family, continue teaching, and work on his family’s farm.
The state also faced local developments, including school staff cuts, traffic crashes, and a statewide sobriety enforcement campaign.
