Nigeria reschedules 2027 elections to avoid Ramadan, with key dates set for January and February 2027.
Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rescheduled the 2027 general elections, moving the presidential and National Assembly polls to January 16, 2027, and governorship and state assembly elections to February 6, 2027, following the enactment of the 2026 Electoral Act.
The change, which avoids Ramadan, aligns with new legal timelines and addresses prior criticism.
Party primaries will run from April 23 to May 30, 2026, with national campaigns starting August 19 and state campaigns beginning September 9, both ending 24 hours before election day.
The Osun state governorship election has been moved to August 15, 2026.
