New Zealand’s new Bioeconomy Science Institute cuts 134 jobs, including 86 scientists, sparking concern over science and economic risks.
The newly formed Bioeconomy Science Institute in New Zealand is cutting 134 jobs, including 86 science roles, less than a year after its creation through the merger of four Crown research bodies.
The layoffs, part of a financial improvement process, follow earlier cuts at other research institutes and the dissolution of Callaghan Innovation, resulting in over 600 science positions lost nationwide.
Critics, including the Public Service Association, say the reductions undermine scientific capacity, contradict government advisory warnings, and threaten economic growth and climate resilience.
The government has not explained the rationale behind the cuts.
