New Zealand will require most gift cards to have a minimum three-year expiry starting 16 March 2026.
Starting 16 March 2026, New Zealand will enforce a three-year minimum expiry for most gift cards and vouchers, including those bought, earned via loyalty points, or given as incentives, to prevent loss of value. Exemptions apply to prepaid cards for utilities, telecoms, and public transport. Loyalty points and automatically issued vouchers are not subject to expiry rules. If no expiry date is listed, the card remains valid indefinitely. The Commerce Commission has promised pragmatic enforcement to help retailers adapt.
