NATO approves iPhones and iPads for lowest-level classified use due to strong built-in security.
NATO has approved iPhones and iPads running iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 to handle its lowest level of classified information, known as NATO-restricted, making them the first consumer devices to meet the alliance’s security standards without requiring additional software or configurations.
The certification, based on extensive testing by Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), validates Apple’s integrated security features—such as end-to-end encryption, Face ID, and Memory Integrity Enforcement—as sufficient for protecting sensitive data across all NATO member nations.
The approval follows prior certification for German government use and marks a major milestone in consumer technology security.
