London will pedestrianise 0.7 miles of Oxford Street by late 2026, banning all vehicles except service vehicles at night.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has approved plans to pedestrianise a 0.7-mile stretch of Oxford Street from Oxford Circus to Marble Arch, starting this summer, with full traffic bans expected by year’s end.
The project, aimed at boosting shopping, leisure, and public events, removes all vehicles including buses, taxis, and cyclists, with service vehicles allowed only between midnight and 7 a.m.
Buses will be rerouted to Wigmore Street and Henrietta Place, and new crossings and drop-off points will be added.
The change follows strong business support and a prior 2018 setback, now overcome through TfL’s control of the road.
Construction begins in summer 2026, with the full pedestrianised section expected by late 2026.
