Legendary Major League Baseball umpire Bruce Froemming, who worked 5,163 games over 37 seasons and officiated a record 11 no-hitters, died at 86 after a fall at his home in Mequon, Wisconsin.
He suffered fatal head injuries while on blood thinners and was taken to a Milwaukee hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Froemming began umpiring in 1958 at age 18 in the minors, joined the National League in 1971, and became part of the unified MLB staff in 2000.
He retired in 2007, known for his professionalism and consistency, and later served as a special assistant to MLB’s umpiring vice president.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, sister, half-brother, and two grandchildren.
