flag Kerala launched its first biogas plant in Kochi, processing 150 tons of waste daily to cut emissions and advance its goal of becoming India’s first dumpsite-free state.

Kerala inaugurated its first Compressed Biogas plant in Kochi on February 27, 2026, processing 150 tonnes of biodegradable waste daily to produce 5.6 tonnes of clean fuel and 28 tonnes of organic manure. The project, led by BPCL and the state government, is part of a broader effort to eliminate dumpsites, with 25 of 59 sites cleared and 96 acres reclaimed. Eight RDF plants now process 600 tonnes of waste daily, reducing reliance on out-of-state cement factories. Kerala aims to become India’s first dumpsite-free state within two years, supported by door-to-door waste collection, decentralized treatment, and a state-led initiative that prevented 430 lakh tonnes of CO2 emissions. Varkala is now a UN-recognized Zero Waste City, and eight Kerala cities were among India’s 100 cleanest in 2025.
