Irish retail sales rose 3% year-on-year in January 2026, driven by books and hardware, despite declines in cars and medicine.
Irish retail sales rose 1.5% in January 2026 compared to December and were 3% higher than in January 2025, the strongest year-on-year growth in four months, provisional Central Statistics Office data shows.
Excluding motor vehicle trades, sales dipped 0.4% monthly but rose 2.1% annually.
Growth was led by books, newspapers, and stationery, up 13.8%, followed by hardware and fuel.
Motor vehicle sales fell 9.6%, and pharmaceuticals declined 7%.
