Ireland breaks ground on 142 social homes in Mayo with €47M investment to tackle housing shortage.

Minister Dara Calleary marked the start of 142 new social homes across Mayo with a €47 million investment, including sod-turning and openings in Ballina, Ballyhaunis, Claremorris, Cross West, and Ballinrobe. The projects aim to address a growing housing shortage, especially amid record overcrowding in February 2026. The government is also advancing an affordable purchase turnkey program and exploring modular housing to speed delivery and reduce costs, with a council committee set to visit factories to assess feasibility.
