IPI Nigeria urges new police chief to stop harassing journalists and protect press freedom.
IPI Nigeria has urged new Acting Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu to end harassment of journalists, calling for an end to unlawful detentions and intimidation, and to review cases against reporters.
The group emphasized the police’s constitutional duty to protect press freedom and urged training on human rights and better communication with media stakeholders.
It highlighted past abuses under former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who was added to IPI’s “Book of Infamy.” Meanwhile, Vice President Kashim Shettima pledged federal support for the Nigeria Press Council’s compendium on the economic and tourism potential of Nigeria’s states, praising President Tinubu’s record of press freedom and calling the project a national asset to boost global visibility.
