Iowa boosts school funding by 2% for 2027, adding $82 million, but critics say it’s insufficient amid inflation.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed a bill increasing state funding for public schools by 2% for the 2027 fiscal year, adding $82 million and raising per-pupil funding to $8,148.
The legislation brings total state education spending to over $4 billion, with combined state, local, and federal funding projected at more than $9.1 billion.
The funding supports higher teacher salaries, paraeducator pay, a merit pay program, teacher apprenticeships, literacy grants, and expanded STEM and work-based learning.
While the governor praised the increase as a commitment to education, Democrats and education advocates criticized it as insufficient to keep pace with inflation, warning it may lead to school budget cuts, higher property taxes, or staffing reductions.
The final 2% rate emerged from a compromise between Republican lawmakers, falling short of the 5% increase requested by school districts and the Iowa State Education Association.
