Young adults in India ranked 60th out of 84 countries in global mental well-being, scoring an average MHQ of 33, according to the 2025 Global Mind Health Report by Sapien Labs.
In contrast, Indians over 55 scored significantly higher, ranking 49th globally with an MHQ of 96.
The study, based on over 78,000 respondents in India and nearly one million worldwide, highlights a sharp generational divide, with youth mental health declining since the pandemic.
African nations like Tanzania, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, and Zimbabwe outperformed wealthier countries, attributed to later smartphone use, strong family ties, and higher spirituality.
Despite rising mental health spending, global youth outcomes have not improved, suggesting current approaches focus on symptoms rather than root causes.
