A Hong Kong court overturned Jimmy Lai's 2022 fraud conviction due to insufficient evidence, but he remains imprisoned on national security charges.
A Hong Kong appellate court has overturned the 2022 fraud conviction and five-year, nine-month prison sentence of pro-democracy media tycoon Jimmy Lai, ruling prosecutors failed to prove he knowingly concealed a lease violation involving a consultancy firm linked to his former Apple Daily newspaper.
The court found no legal duty to disclose the arrangement and deemed the lower court’s reasoning unsupportable.
Despite the reversal, Lai remains imprisoned serving a separate 20-year sentence under Hong Kong’s national security law for conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and publishing seditious materials.
The Hong Kong government said it will review the ruling and may appeal.
Lai, a British citizen, has been in custody since 2020 and continues to face international scrutiny over his case.
