Flame shells in Scotland’s Loch Carron fully recovered after being protected since 2017.
A once-damaged shellfish population in Loch Carron, Scotland, has fully recovered after the area became a Marine Protected Area (MPA) in 2017.
Two reports by NatureScot show that flame shell beds, disrupted by a single scallop dredging incident, have regenerated with restored nests and expanded coverage.
Flame shells, which build complex habitats and stabilize the seabed, were able to rebound due to the protection and the bed’s initial health.
Experts say the recovery highlights the effectiveness of swift conservation measures, though outcomes may vary elsewhere based on damage severity and ecosystem conditions.
The site is now one of several protected areas in Scotland safeguarding flame shells.
