A federal judge in Iowa refused to halt a state probe into two teachers' social media posts after Charlie Kirk’s assassination, citing state authority over disciplinary matters.
A federal judge in Iowa has denied a request to stop the state’s investigation into two teachers’ social media posts following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, ruling that federal courts typically should not intervene in ongoing state disciplinary proceedings.
The teachers, Katherine Mejia and Jennifer Smith, argue their posts were protected speech and that the probe, prompted by a letter from the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners’ executive director encouraging complaints, was politically motivated retaliation.
The judge acknowledged the situation as “deeply troubling” but upheld the board’s authority to proceed, classifying the investigation as a “quasi-criminal” matter.
The case remains active in state proceedings, with federal involvement deferred until those conclude.
