DRC and Congo advance joint 6.45-GW hydropower project to boost regional energy.
Officials from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Congo held talks in Brazzaville to advance the joint Pioka-Tombe hydropower project, a 6.45-gigawatt initiative aimed at boosting regional energy integration.
The meeting, led by ministers from both nations, focused on strategic cooperation, with feasibility and technical studies expected to conclude in six to nine months.
The project could pave the way for future development of the larger Grand Inga complex in DR Congo, which could reach 40 to 70 gigawatts.
The effort aligns with Africa’s growing push for large-scale hydropower, similar to Ethiopia’s recently operational Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
