Dorset Council approved a permanent Traveller site near Martin Clunes’ home, allowing two caravans and a workshop on land used for over 20 years.
Dorset Council has approved a permanent Traveller site near Martin Clunes’ Dorset home, granting permission for two residential caravans and a workshop on land the family has occupied for over 20 years.
The 7-2 vote followed a flood risk assessment finding no significant threat and 47 letters of public support.
Despite Clunes’ opposition and claims the family are not statutory Travellers, council officials, a church chaplain, and planning inspectors confirmed their status as New Age Travellers with a long-standing, off-grid lifestyle.
The decision includes conditions: structures must be removed within four months if the couple leaves, and only two caravans are allowed.
The council cited a growing unmet need for Traveller sites and emphasized the family’s community contributions.
