Canada’s population is projected to grow by nearly zero in 2026, the second straight year of flat growth, due to sharp cuts in non-permanent resident admissions.
The federal government reduced temporary work and study visas from nearly 674,000 in 2025 to 385,000 in 2026, while maintaining a permanent resident target of 380,000 annually through 2028.
