Alaska House passes bill to boost legal aid funding by redirecting court fees, aiming to serve more vulnerable residents.
The Alaska House advanced HB 48, which would increase funding for the Alaska Legal Services Corporation by redirecting 25% of court filing fees—up from 10%—to the nonprofit, potentially adding $460,000 annually.
The bill passed 27-13, with bipartisan support from Democrats and six Republicans, while 13 Republicans opposed it over cost concerns.
The funding boost aims to help the agency serve more vulnerable Alaskans, including domestic violence survivors, seniors, veterans, and those facing housing or financial abuse, as it currently turns away about half of applicants due to limited resources.
The legislation now moves to the Senate.
