Vancouver approves $1.2M plan for new police training academy in Downtown Eastside.
Vancouver City Council has approved a $1.2 million plan to create a satellite police training academy in the former London Drugs space at Woodward’s Building in the Downtown Eastside.
Proposed by former VPD officer Coun.
Brian Montague, the academy aims to address staffing shortages by expanding local training capacity, as current recruits are trained at the Justice Institute of B.C., which faces capacity constraints.
The project, pending provincial approval, would be cost-neutral by reassigning existing police staff and is part of a broader effort to strengthen policing in the DTES.
City staff will now develop next steps.
