Thomas Goldstein, a top Supreme Court lawyer, was convicted of tax evasion and fraud over $50M in unreported poker winnings and false loan claims.
A prominent Supreme Court litigator and founder of SCOTUSblog, Thomas Goldstein, was convicted on multiple federal charges including tax evasion, aiding false tax returns, and making false statements on loan applications.
The jury found him guilty after a trial in Greenbelt, Maryland, over unreported poker winnings totaling approximately $50 million, including $22 million earned in Asia, and a $15 million undisclosed gambling debt on a mortgage application.
Prosecutors said he diverted law firm funds to cover debts and falsely claimed losses as business expenses.
Goldstein, who argued over 40 cases before the Supreme Court and was part of Al Gore’s 2000 election legal team, denied wrongdoing, claiming he instructed staff to file correct returns and made only honest errors.
The case was triggered when a fellow gambler reported a debt to the IRS.
