Tennessee has approved The Boring Company’s Music City Loop, a privately funded underground tunnel project connecting downtown Nashville to Nashville International Airport and lower Broadway.
The project, which requires no taxpayer money, will use Tesla taxis to cut travel time to about eight minutes and is set to begin construction immediately, with the first segment expected to open by end of 2026.
Final approvals came from both the Tennessee Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration, clearing the way for tunneling beneath state highways.
A new state board, the Subterranean Transportation Infrastructure Coordination Authority, has been proposed to oversee the project and future underground transit systems, with broad powers to streamline permitting and override local decisions.
While officials praise the initiative as a model for innovative infrastructure, some lawmakers have raised concerns over safety, environmental impact, and reduced local control.
