A Sydney gas fitter was jailed for 2 years and 10 months after a 2015 error caused a newborn’s death and severe injury to another infant.
Christopher Turner, a 64-year-old former Sydney gas fitter, was sentenced to two years and 10 months in prison for manslaughter and causing grievous bodily harm after a 2015 error at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital led to the death of newborn John Ghanem and severe brain injury to baby Amelia Khan.
Turner failed to test medical gas lines as required, installed nitrous oxide into the oxygen system, and falsified safety documentation.
The mistake, undetected until 2016, caused both babies to receive the wrong gas—John died after 50 minutes of exposure, and Amelia suffered permanent disabilities.
A judge called his actions grossly negligent.
Turner, who initially denied charges but pleaded guilty, will serve 10 months before parole on December 24, 2026.
The case prompted new licensing laws for medical gas installers in NSW.
